34 refugees have received much needed equipment at no cost
The collaboration between NSW Health, Northcott and NI to support recently arrived refugees with disability reached five years in 2023.
Over this time, 34 refugees, aged from 2 – 65 years, have received much-needed footwear or orthotics equipment at no cost. Refugees referred to the program are not yet eligible for NDIS funding. Funding from NSW Health covers the cost of assessments by Northcott therapists and orthotists, as well as the manufacture and fitting of customised equipment and devices. Many of the devices provided are life-changing in their support.
“This collaboration has been wonderful for a number of our clients over some years now. It enables these clients to receive much-needed orthotics in a timely fashion. Given our clients are newly arrived humanitarian entrants, the project is like a fast track to receiving much needed devices and an important step in enhancing the settlement process for this vulnerable population.” – Mark Mahoney, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Disability Support Team, NSW Refugee Health Service

Research project update
2nd year as a research partner investigating preventative health for people with intellectual disability
We are in our second year as a partner on a multi-institutional grant led by the University of NSW (Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry) to develop a National Preventative Health Model for People with Intellectual Disability.
With other leading disability service providers, health institutes, academics, and peak disability bodies, Northcott is determined to address the health inequalities that face people with an intellectual disability.
The grant has been funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) – with an expanded budget of $5.6M cash and in-kind contributions. The project will be of substantial benefit to the health and wellbeing of people with intellectual disability, and represents a very important and exciting body of work.
